Having custom footwear made is fun. At your first appointment, which can happen here at Rotering Shoes or at a place convenient to you, we will discuss design. Some people bring clippings of shoes they like, and shoes they don’t. (That way I know what to pursue and what to avoid.) You can be as vague or as specific as you like.

Then we take measurements and tracings of your feet.

At our next meeting, approximately two weeks later, you will try on a “mockup”. This term refers to one shoe, made of felt, which is used to confirm that the pattern has been cut to your preference. At this time, when you see it on your foot, you may want to move a seam, or lengthen the height of a boot, or change it in a different manner. We do this to make sure you get a look you really like before we cut the leather.

Depending on the style of footwear you order, your next visit may be to pick up your completed pair of boots or shoes, or there may be another fitting necessary. Generally, the process takes about a month from start to finish, though this may vary. If it is crucial that you have your shoes for a certain date, please let us know at the beginning, and we will be able to accommodate this request.

TIP: Wondering what styles suit your feet best? Draw on them! I use old eyeliners, and sketch onto my bare feet until I come up with something I like. Just make sure you wash it off before you go out if it’s summer.
